Carlo Florindo Semini Biography Biography

The composer, Carlo Florindo Semini, from Ticino in southern Switzerland, studied in Switzerland and in Italy.

He received diplomas in Composition, Orchestral conducting, Piano Performance as well as Vocal Didactics at the Conservatory San Pietro a Majella of Naples and studied Musicology and Gregorian chant in Rome and in Switzerland. 

After some years of professional activity in Naples, Semini returned to his home country, and was actively involved in composition, piano performance, orchestral direction and as a music critic and teacher. 

From 1966 until 1980 he was the head of the Symphonic and Chamber music departments at the Radio della Svizzera Italiana in Lugano, Switzerland. 

In his many-faceted activities in favor of the growth of musical culture in his Canton, he is also remembered as Professor of Music History at the High School of Lugano (until 1978), as commissioner at the Scuola Magistrale of the Canton Ticino and as a moving force in various cultural initiatives such as the foundation “Jeunesses musicales” of Ticino, the Organ Festival of Magadino and as Artistic Director of Masterclasses, such as the Villa Heleneum with Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli, etc. In 1962 he was co-founder of the Music Competition of Enna (Sicily) and in 1993 he founded and became president of the Ernest Bloch International Composition Competition. 

He was a permanent member, often president, in juries of many International Musical Competitions and served as musical consultant for public and private associations as well as examination commissioner in important Conservatories of Music. 

His compositions have been successfully acclaimed by public and critics alike in concert halls and international festivals, such as the EAOSS-Orchestra Sinfonica della Regione Siciliana “Armonici Siciliani”, Lausanne Chamber Orchestra, Orchestra Haydn of Bolzano, Orchestra of Schleswig-Holstein, Festival of Munich, Teatro Comunale of Bologna and the Orchestra of the RAI (Italy). His works have been performed in concert halls such as the Grosse Tonhalle of Zurich, Gaveau of Paris, Sala Verdi of the Conservatory of Music of Milan, Teatro Massimo Bellini of Catania, Moscow Conservatory, Ravel Auditorium of Lyon, Victoria Hall of Geneva, etc. 

In 1987 he was nominated Member of Honour of the SUISA (Swiss Commission of Authors’ Rights). 

In 2009, the public square in front of the Theater at Piazza Armerina, Italy, was dedicated to his memory.
